Bible Study: Experiencing God
When: Monday - Thursdays 8:00am – 9:00am
Description: If your desire is to have a deeper relationship with the Lord, this bible study could change your life. I encourage any woman who is looking for a way to connect with other ladies and grow spiritually to join this study.

Job Readiness:
When: Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays 9:00-12:30
Description: A Step –by- Step Guide to Finding a Good Job in Less Time. Commonsense advice and practical, interactive worksheets you can use to identify your key skills, write a superior resume and cover letter, find the hidden job markets, dramatically improve your interviewing skills, develop your strategy for getting a job and meet your employer’s expectations.

Introspect Study Course: The Focus this Month is Forgiveness
When: Mondays 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Description: This study is for those who genuinely want to take a good hard look at their lives. This study will help examine the road you are on and where it will take you. It will also help you understand if you need to change directions and how to so. This class is open to all ladies.

GreifShare: Support Group for Individuals Grieving the Loss of a Loved One
When: Tuesdays 6:00pm
Description: GriefShare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone.
It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel.
GriefShare will help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. Each GriefShare session has three distinct elements: Video Seminar with Experts, Support Group Discussion with Focus and Workbook- Based Personal Study and Reflection.

Focus Support Group
When: Tuesday 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Description: This support group is open to all ladies. This month we will continue our look at destructive relationships. Our focus will be Standing up to the destructive person and Surviving a Destructive Relationship.
We are using materials from FOCUS Ministries as well as a book entitled The Emotionally Destructive Relationship by Leslie Vernick. I highly recommend this support group.

Parenting Class
When: Wednesday 9:00am – 11:00am
Description: If you are a lady who needs encouragement in the area of child rearing this class will help. You will learn techniques that will help you feel more in control of your parenting skills. We will help you lay out a plan that will work for you and your children.

Single Mom Support Group
When: Thursdays 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Where: Esther House Women's Empowerment Center/ On Line, call for instructions, 270-864-2200 or 270-406-3193
Description: We will be using material from My Life as a Single Mom by Angela Thomas. This is a support group for any single mom who would like to share and interact with other women who understands the day to day pressures and challenges of being a single mom.

Prayer Focus

Thank you for taking a moment to pray for us.

Please remember to to keep the ladies and their children at the Esther House and the Empowerment Center in your prayers. These individuals face many challenges as they strive for a fresh start.

It is our hearts desire to continue to reach out to women in our local area as well as women from other cities, counties and states. We are praying that God continue to give us direction in this area.
This month we have started a Single Moms support group that can be accessed via the internet, in this way we are able to offer support and encouragement to more women. We never want any woman to feel alone or that she has no where to turn.
We are also starting a support group for women who are grieving the loss of a loved one; this support group will start March 6th. Please pray for the support group leader and the individual who come.

As with any non-profit, finances is always a concern. God has always provided for Esther House and the Empowerment Center and we believe He will continue to do so. I am asking you to please remember to keep this important need before God in your prayers.

Remember to keep the staff and volunteers covered with prayer.

We are using materials from FOCUS Ministries as well as a book entitled The Emotionally Destructive Relationship by Leslie Vernick. We will first take a look at our own destructive patterns as well learn ways to constructively deal with others destructive behaviors. I highly recommend this support group.

Managing Anger Course Study
When: Wednesday 2:30pm – 4:00pm
Where: Esther House Women's Empowerment Center 1011 North Main Burkesville, KY 42717
Description: Anger is physiological, emotional, and behavioral. When anger surges, it triggers a biochemical (physical) reaction which produces unusual amounts of energy. This rush of energy is mentally processed (emotional) and then acted upon (behavioral). The challenge is what to do with this energy. This study course will give you techniques to handle this rush of energy in a constructive way.

Single Mom Support Group
When: Thursdays 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Where: Esther House Women's Empowerment Center 1011 North Main Burkesville, KY 42717
Description:We will be using material from My Single Mom Life by Angela Thomas. This is a support group for any single mom who would like to share and interact with other women who understands the day to day pressures and challenges of being a single mom.

I would like to take a moment to thank you for yourcommitment to pray for Esther House in 2011.

I know that without your continuous support through prayer,Esther House would not have witnessed the miracles we experienced in 2011. Wehad the awesome privilege of sharing in spiritual, emotional and physical growth.We saw ladies commit their hearts to the Lord and follow through with baptism. Wesaw commitment to change and grow as women of God, as mothers and asindividuals. We saw families restored and healing begin to take form in thelives of the women and children we serve. I know that this was only possible because of the many prayers that wentup on our behalf.

I would also like to thank the individuals responsible forthe 2011 Prayer Tree. Ms. Alta Flo Lewis and Ms. Elizabeth Cornwall spent muchtime preparing prayers and scripture that went out in your letters and emails.Ms. Conchita Moore donated her time to format much of the Prayer Tree for thevarious churches involved. Ms. Erika Adams committed time each week to makesure the letters and emails were sent out on time. Without the help and supportof these wonderful ladies this Prayer Tree would not have been possible. Iwould also like to thank the churches that made an effort to support EstherHouse by displaying information and encouraging your congregations to pray forus.

In 2012 we ask for your continued support through prayer aswell as your financial support. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth. Exodus 9:16

Father, for what purpose was the Esther House Ministry raised up? Was it not to show your power of deliverance to souls in bondage? Was it not to set the people free and teach them your ways, Oh Lord? Father, we are ordinary people, but made super-ordinary by the Holy Spirit which gave us power to be witnesses unto you Lord. Raise us up, Oh Lord, as we go about your work, so that your name may be proclaimed in all the earth, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord, give us an intense hunger for your Word that we will read and hide your word in our heart that we might not sin against you. Father, may your word abound freely in everyone at Esther House that those who hear and hid your word in their hearts might not sin against you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Four Ladies Recieve their CPR / First Aid Certification

Four Esther House Women’s Empowerment Center Students received their CPR / First Aid Certification. The class was taught by ASHI Certified Instructor, Lorne Holler

American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) resuscitation programs for basic and advanced life support conform to national standards and are based on the same scientific guidelines and treatment recommendations used by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Red Cross (ARC) for course development. ASHI professional resuscitation programs meet the requirements of the Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services.

CPR Certification is good for 2 years and your First- Aid Certification is good for 3 years.

This quarter we are praying for, Heart of God, Salvation

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. Dear Friends,

Since the inception of Esther House Home for Battered Women and their children and The Women’s Empowerment Center we have touched the lives of over 100 individuals, exposing them to a pathway free from domestic violence. It is always a joy to watch as a woman transitions from a victim of abuse and poverty, into a strong woman who is self sufficient. Not only is this a positive thing for her and her family, but the community as a whole. Many of you have been a part of this mission since it started in late 2006. It begin with a dream to reach out to hurting women and now, because of your continued support, Esther House is truly making a difference in the lives of women and children. Now, more than ever, we need you to continue to stand with us to wipe out Domestic Violence in our community.

I would like to share with you just of few of the things that your support helps to fund. With the dollars raised at Evening of Hope we are able to assist with the most basic needs; safe shelter, lights, water, transportation and food. Women also receive training, classes and life skills necessary for them to move from their current situation to new beginnings. These new beginnings include parenting and finance classes as well as job readiness classes which will prepare them to enter into the workforce. We help to facilitate their GED studies, assist in the preparation of college applications and financial aid forms. But, perhaps one of the most important things we do is to encourage and support these ladies in their darkest hour. We can only continue this vital ministry with your support.

Our Fifth Annual Esther's Evening of Hope Dinner and Reverse Raffle will be held at 5:30 pm on October 8th, 2011 in the Ray Mullinix Conference Center at the beautiful Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park. The event will be an inspirational and exciting evening that will include live entertainment, a live auction, a reverse raffle and more. Your support is vital to the success of this mission.

For this year’s entertainment we are excited to welcome back Angie Honeycutt. Angie is a very talented singer/songwriter who has sang at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Orchestra Kentucky in several Retro- series shows, in Nicaragua, Honduras and Mexico. Angie has recorded original songs as well as cover tunes. We are very excited to have this wife, mom, teacher and dear friend join us in this endeavor. You will be moved by the emotion Angie brings to her music.

This dinner is our largest fund raising event of the year. For a donation of $100 you will receive two dinners and one ticket for an opportunity to walk away with $5,000 (You do not have to be present to win.)

Crafts, Cooking, Bouncy House, & a Water Slide were just a few of our many fun activities at Family Fun Day, on June 16th. We had a blast with all of our students and their children and really appreciate Mrs Connie for all her hard work on this event. Miss Kelly cooked the Hamburger & Hot dogs while Mrs Connie got the kids occupied in the kitchen, creating a fruit pizza. There were crafts for all ages and games to play. We started the day with a devotion about Creation has to have a Creator, and ended with full bellies and sleepy babies. It was a true pleasure to meet the children of these mothers we have come to know and love.

Esther House Women's Empowerment Center Congratulates Joanie Sleeth on receiving her GED.

Joanie has attended classes at the Esther House Women's Empowerment Center since May. Joanie says"the Empowerment Center has given me the confidence I needed to get my GED because the ladies here believed in me and now I feel that I can accomplish anything." Joanie will be attending Somerset Community College this fall where she will pursue a career in criminal justice as she one day hopes to be a probation officer.

The desire of Esther House is to empower women in Cumberland and the surrounding counties to obtain skills for a well balanced life which in return leads to well adapted citizens in our communities.

Esther House strives to meet the needs of the ladies we serve through practical, hands on training. At the center we offer Job readiness and Life skills classes which include Self- Enrichment, Parenting, Finance, Cooking/Nutrition, Computer Classes, facilitate GED Studies, as well as Support Groups.

Bruised Reeds and Smoldering Wicks......A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. Until He leads justice to victory, In His name the nations will put their hope. Matt. 12:20-21

These encouraging words remind us that even when we are bruised and beaten down from life's struggles, and only a tiny ember remains of our joy, God lovingly shows us His compassion and mercy, mends our brokenness, and renews our spirits.

He doesn't berate or condemn our failures, but instead He shows us a preview of the person we can become as we allow Him to reshape our lives into His image.

When we focus too long on our pain (and the source of that pain), we fall into the snare of anger, bitterness, revenge, and all the physical and emotional distresses that follow.

However, when we look out of our pain toward the Lord, we receive hope and confidence that God is in control. He will restore our joy and give us a purpose for living.....Focus Ministries

June is Cooking!

The Empowerment Center is heading into the new month of June with flavor. We are continuing to offer our Nutrition and Cooking class with Miss Connie and have linked with the UK County Extension office this month with a few more nutritional and cooking classes. The Center's staff and students love Mondays because of the good food we are served at lunch and with luck-- left overs for a few days. Some of the foods on the menu this month have been: Lasagna, Salmon Patties, Chocolate covered strawberries, Squash casserole, and more. The County Extension office has served the students with a class about skewing on the Barbecue. What a great idea for getting those fruits, vegetables, and meats in for a healthy intake. A big thanks to all who are making this month happen at the Empowerment Center.

Nine ladies participated in the challenge to create a log to be used to keep track of the books assigned to each student. Tera used the skills she has learned in her computer class to create the winning log. Congratulations Tera!

We are half way through our February classes!

Wow! We are half way through our February classes and they are going great...new classes, new instructors and new participants. We are extremely busy and loving every minute of it!

Computer classes are very encouraging; the ladies are excited about the new skills they are learning. With the help of our new computer instructor, Jessica Morris, we have broken the classes down into manageable components so that all students are working at a pace that is challenging but not discouraging.

We have added phone skills and mastering office equipment to our schedule. Ms Angela Samson is working hard to equip the ladies with this basic knowledge that is so important in the high tech world in which we live.

Mr. Billy Guffey is teaching a blogging class for a fun way to continue honing computer skills. The ladies really enjoy this class and are improving their computer knowledge while having a great time.

Ms. Connie Duvall is doing a fabulous job as always with her classes; Self- Enrichment, Finance and Cooking. We feel these basic life skills classes are necessary in giving the ladies that extra boost of confidence they need to succeed.

Ms. Erika Adams continues to prepare the ladies for the workplace with her Job Readiness Classes. In this class Ms. Erika takes the ladies through the process of pre-career preparation. They evaluate their strengths and skills and build a statue of rapport that highlights them as a valued employee. The Job Readiness class equips the girls with a resume and cover letter before leaving the class and allows the girls to discover all options of employment instead of the limited employment concept.

I cannot say enough about the team God has put into place to speak into the lives of the ladies we are so privileged to work with everyday. Without the devotion and dedication of these people, the center would be just another place to come, go through the motions and go home; but because of the love and compassion that these individuals bring with them each and every day, we are seeing lives changed and dreams realized.

We have a great group of hard working ladies participating in the program. These women are setting short and long term goals and devising plans to make it happen!

I invite you to stop and visit, ask questions and see firsthand the steps Esther House Women’s Empowerment Center is taking to improve the quality of the individuals we serve.

Celebrating One Year!

It was one year ago today that we opened the doors to Esther House Women's Empowerment Center.

First and foremost, I have to say THANK YOU LORD for opening the doors and for Your guidance and protection the past year!

The year has been filled with exhilarating highs as we have watched each month as new ladies would make their way through the doors of the center for the first time. Many not knowing what to except but often eager to learn and expand their horizons. It hasn't always been easy but it has always been worth it. At times the days would seem long, as if we were in an uphill battle with little hope for accomplishment. There have also been months that the ladies seemed to thrive and grow by leaps and bounds. We may never know why some people seem to never quite "get it" while others need only some encouragement and guidance from people who believe in them. Regardless if we have a group of ladies who just doesn't get it or if we have a group who is soaking everything up like a sponge...we are committed, as staff, volunteers, board of directors and community to fulfill this call we have on our lives. The call to reach out to ladies who have, for what ever reason, found themselves at a place in life where they need someone to give a helping hand and a word of encouragement. We will continue to plant seed, water what we have planted and prayerfully watch as these ladies develop into their full potential and purpose.

I can not end this post without saying a Huge THANK YOU to all the instructors both past and present, both paid and volunteers who have made this past year possible. I am truly blessed to have the support of strong women who know from where their strength comes to accompany me on this incredible journey!

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us for our one year celebration on February 17, 2011 from 1:00 - 5:00 at the center. We will have a ribbon cutting at 1:00, great refreshments and we encourage you to tour the center and meet some of the students and staff.

Busy Times for the Empowerment Center!

2011 OFF TO A GREAT START!!!

   We are excited about the things God has planned for the Esther House and Women’s Empowerment Center in 2011. As we begin a new year in His service, we realize that without the direction of God, we can do nothing but with God all things are possible.

The year is off to a great start at the Empowerment Center, we now have eight ladies enrolled in the January classes which include Job Readiness, Self-Enrichment, Successful Life Planning, Cooking, Financial Peace, Character Development and Office Etiquette. On top of all that some of the ladies are also preparing to take their GED’s. Shewww….we sure pack a lot into a day.

    I would like to invite you to get involved by becoming a prayer partner throughout the year. This is what being a prayer partner means, you commit to pray for the ministry weekly and that’s it. We even give you an outline to go by, doesn’t get much easier than that.   We have broken the areas of focus into the four quarters of the year. January through March we will be focusing on Wisdom, Discernment and Direction. Each week I will post the scripture reference and prayer, along with any special prayer needs that we have. As we know and have witnessed many times since the doors to the home opened in 2009 and the center in 2010, PRAYER CHANGES THINGS!   Ready? Here you go….I am going to give you the first three weeks so you are all caught up.

Wisdom, Discernment and Direction

Week 2: January 9-15

I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might Ephesians 1:16-19

"Heavenly Father, help me to ceaselessly give thanks this week for Esther House and the Women’s Empowerment Center. Let me remember them in my prayers. Two Girls Graduate the Program!

At the end of May we had our monthly festivites in which we said good-bye to Amy and Stephanie. These two girls were our first two to complete the program and head to new heights by enrolling in Somerset Community College. While Stephanie had already obtained her HS Diploma and had a full year of accredited hours under her belt, she still achieved excellence by maintaining a consistent attendance and participation at the Esther House Resource Center. Amy also is to be recognized as she was our first student to obtain her GED while enrolled. Amy and Stephanie both received a certificate in Financial Peace University. Both these girls are "Awesome" individuals and we hope they continue on striving and thriving in each goal that they set in life.

GED Checked off the List!

I started coming to the Esther House Resource Center on Feb, 01, 2010. I was a little worried about the new change that was about to happen, getting to go to classes again. How weird I thought, but little did I know that I would go from picking up trash for my hours of k-tap, to getting to study classes such as Computer, Spanish, Parenting, Household Management, Book Club, Financial Peace, Nutrition, Gardening, Sewing, and Study Hall. Since I have been coming here, these classes have really helped me from learning how to save money with Dave Ramsey in Financial Peace, to the simple ways of making cleaning house an easy, ever day hassle free chore with the Household Management. But most importantly, I had a chance to study for my G.E.D during Study Hall. This class really came helped me because in April 2010, I passed my G.E.D test!

Since I have passed my test, Mrs. Kelly Guffey, the president of the Esther House Resource Center, has given me many different ideas of what is possible for me in the days to come, such as LPN classes and so many more ideas. I have really enjoyed the conversations with Mrs. Kelly. She has really showed me that there is more to life for single mothers than to just sit at home and do nothing but raise your child/children. There is so much hope out there for young ladies such as you. There's a song by Reba McEntiire that really inspired me also. 'Is There A life Out There" She sang of a mother that wants a life outside her home but at the same time she doesn't want to leave her family. In that video her family is there supporting her dreams when she graduates from college. So I follow that dream that there will be a time that my children will get to stand there and be proud of their mother for finishing college. I do owe many thanks to Mrs. Kelly for opening the doors for me an many other lady's dreams to come true. I will forever be on your side. LOL!

It's almost election time....Have you made your mind up yet?

Citizens of Cumberland County its about that time to cast our votes on who is going to represent. The Esther House is hosting the Ice Cream Social on the 14th @ 6. We're believing it's going to be an exciting fun time. We will have loads of ice cream with the candidates supplying the topping. The candidates will then take center stage and give a description of their dessert in comparison to their qualifications. If that's not enough-- when the heat rises, the bidding will take place. I'm wondering if a good speech will secure a high dollar cake. (We'll see) Food-- Politics and a little support always goes a long way. Let's gather together and have some fun!!!!!!

Whooo Heeee! At the end of March we celebrated our first awards ceremony. In this, we rewarded the girls for their participation and involvement in the program. They were noticed for owning character building quailties plus just plain ol participation. (which always goes a long way) This was such a fun time with special guest and some good food. We plan to have more times such as this one and can't wait to do so.

Esther House Resource Center-- Up and Running and enough to Grow On!

Hello--all blog readers and Esther House supporters. Today marks the third month of establishment for the Esther House Resource Center. Hence, I have been inspired to dig a little from the past weeks and share the exciting yet challenging moments we have began to venture upon.
The Resource Center opened the doors to the public February o1, 2010. Hip Hip Hooray! This indeed was a very exciting moment. We had a total of nine students on opening week and offered a range of six classes. There is presently a phenomenal scope of teachers aligned--- who not only cover the material, but equip the girls with the support they need, to allow their personal capabilities to grow.
Classes at the Resource Center have grown to ten and will remain the same for our third month. By now you might be wondering what some of these classes are and so here’s the best shot I can give you from memory:
Sewing, Nutrition, Cooking, Financial Peace, Book Club, House Hold Management, Self Enrichment, Exercise, Gardening, Spanish.
Yeah, I’m getting better at remembering those. Anyhow, what a wonderful opportunity at hand………....…. The students here at the Resource Center are being exposed and nurtured with a vast variety of material that I myself would love to undergo.
One of the other mentioning factors is the students. While we are just beginning the enrollment process, we have been favored with receiving an undeniable fresh flow of goal builders. Not only are the students at the Resource Center exposed to expectation and hope, but their families are of consistent consideration as well. The girls are setting their own personal goals and allowing people to help nudge or listen or whatever it is that we can do to help.
In short: With relationships being built stronger, on a solid committed level, there indeed is great pride present while watching the girls reach for their goals. What sometimes seems unimportant, has suddenly surfaced to us as ordinances of necessity. We, at the Esther House Resource Center, are in awe of the possibilities that surround this community and the individual lives that are in reach.
